Mica's Lectures Include:
-
Accomplishing the Impossible
Perhaps
Mica's most popular lecture could better be titled: “Confronting
the Impossible." Mica
uses both his experience as someone who faces the most unusual,
and sometimes life or death circumstances on a regular bases,
and his skills as a juggler and magician to demonstrate how
to not fear or avoid stepping across that line into the realm
of tackling the impossible. We all have those things which
we feel are absolutely just beyond what we can ever do. By
viewing “Impossible” demonstrations and engaging in certain
fun and exciting exercises the audience can realize that “impossible” is
often just a wall of paper that can be torn down with PRACTICE.
Most people
have heard of the great Chicago fire of 1871. As an instructor
of fire service history, Captain Calfee was also aware
of the other fires that occurred, in that region of the
U.S., on the same night. The
fire in Peshtigo, Wisconsin was many times the magnitude
and the loss of life was
triple that in Chicago. Would it surprise
you to know that there was also a report of a “Meteor
Shower” that
same evening? Do you think that a meteor, breaking
up over the center of the continent may have caused
one
or both of these fires? With the direct assistance
of scientists from NASA, JPL and such notables as David
Levy, Mica has conducted research to determined what
the odds are for this to have occurred. The results
might
surprise you. The lecture includes pictures (slides)
and samples of meteorites. (Read about it here.)
Captain
Calfee has had several stories and articles
about emergency operations printed in various
publications. Some of these stories are
inspirational and full of human drama.
Some are beyond belief. Others are just
too funny to believe. He would be happy
to share some of these stories with your
group. (Sample stories here.)
- "It's
not about bowling!" -Conflict Management
An important aspect of defending yourself
during a verbal conflict is knowing that you
are under attack. Many people can disguise their
attacks to look like reasonable questions or
even apologies. This lecture teaches you how
to recognize
these attacks. By knowing that a land mine has
been placed in your path, and where it is, you
can avoid disaster.
As
a captain of a fire station, Captain Calfee is faced
with an unusual challenge. The fact that fire fighters
practically live together make for some interesting
group dynamics. Captain Calfee is faced with managing life and work around
the
station as well as on the emergency scene in sometimes life or death situations.
Captain Calfee was a paramedic for nineteen years. Some of that time was spent
as EMS supervisor. He has had to deal with irate or confused citizens in some
of the most stressful moments of their lives. This
lecture
focuses
on
recognizing
conflict.
Do
you
know
when
you
are
being confronted or are you just sharing ideas? We will talk about recognizing
the "attack" and
how to bring this back down to a healthy conversation. We will also discuss
that "apology" that
leaves you still feeling bad about yourself, but you don't know why. Captain
Calfee has seen verbal conflict. You can share his experiences with successes
and failures in this lecture. Virtually all can be applied to business or personal
conflicts.
