A firefighter who has been
published in several magazines. His
works include scientific, humorous, and inspirational
articles. He was recently featured on Fox 4 for a
rescue
he participated in. He has been written about by
Steve Blow in the Dallas Morning News for his
efforts to
protect consumers and fight unlawful advertising
practices. For this he has testified before the
Texas Supreme
Court as a “Friend of the court” (Amicus
Curiae). His most recently published article is about
the worst natural disaster in U.S. history (that no
one knows about.) It’s entitled: “Was it
a Cow or a Comet?" This article first appeared in "Meteorite
Magazine" and was then later excerpted in "Firehouse
Magazine". He also lectures on “Accomplishing
the Impossible!”
As a professional firefighter
and paramedic for over 30 years, Captain
Calfee has accumulated stories which
are humorous and others which are inspirational or
riveting. As a member of the Irving, Texas Fire department
he
was one of the first people on the scene of the Delta
flight 191 crash at DFW airport. He later appeared
in
the movie about that event titled, “Fire and
Rain.”
Captain
Calfee has attended numerous National Fire Academy
classes on the subject of leadership.
He has
also developed a lecture on “The Qualities of
Leadership” from research of his own. This research
involved contacting hundreds of firefighters on a national
level.
Captain Calfee has taught many firefighters
a wide variety of subjects. He holds, or has held,
the Texas
certifications of Master Firefighter, Paramedic, State
Fire Service Instructor, State Field Examiner, EMS
Instructor
and others.
If
having achieved the rank of Captain on a major municipal
fire department was not enough, Mica has many other
skills and experiences.
Mica
has, as his “off duty job” enjoyed
being a popular variety entertainer for over 25 years.
He has been a member of the Texas Association of
Magicians
since 1972. His membership in the International Jugglers
Association has been for over 20 years and he has
been
an active member of the Society of American Magicians
for many years as well. While he and his wife have
performed
for festivals, television shows and many other venues,
his specialty is close up magic. They have performed
all over the United states and in Europe.
Mica
Also speaks on “Confronting
the Impossible.” Mica uses both his
experience as someone who faces the most unusual
circumstances on a regular bases and his
skills as a juggler and magician to demonstrate how
to not fear or avoid stepping across that line into
the realm of tackling the impossible. We all have
those
things which we feel are absolutely just beyond what
we can ever do. By engaging in certain fun and exciting
exercises the audience can realize that “impossible” is
often just a wall of paper that can be torn down with
PRACTICE.

Mica's lecture topics.
Mica was named after a mineral by his brother and sister.
He has a background and formal education in music, science
and geology. He was a professional musician in the U.S.
Army for almost 7 years while maintaining the certification
as a tank crewman and commander. Mica was assigned to
the First Cav. Division, The Third Infantry Div. (Germany)
and the Fourth Infantry in Ft. Carson Co. While stationed
in Germany and Colorado, Sergeant Calfee taught repelling
and mountaineering skills, CPR and first aid. He has
never been someone to do just one thing. He has performed
professionally on, Baritone Horn, String Bass, and voice.
He also plays recorder and five string banjo.
