"I joined the Navy right out of high school in the
year 1978. I went in with of kinds of hopes and dreams.
I would go to college and save money to prepare for
my life after the military.
My plans and what really happened were not the same.I
partied and lived a wild life style so typical of a
single guy far from home.I grew up going to church
and I knew about God. I never doubted His existence;
I just ignored a personal
relationship
with Him.
There came a time when I was no longer caught up
with drinking and smoking pot or looking for a wife.
I had
experienced some hard knocks in my life and I was
empty and not like who I was when I looked in the
mirror.
My father wrote me a very long letter
telling me about God, quoting scripture and asking
me where
I was spiritually.
I was very curious because he had never written
a letter this long before and I had not been
challenged
to see
that a lot of my problems came from no having God
in my life.
We ignore what we need most. I picked up a new
testament and started reading Romans. The Bible
would tell
me that I was a sinner and I needed to tell God
that.
I would read tracts, get convicted,
put the tracts away, but never throw them away.
I told God one day, if what I am reading is for
real and He was listening to me, send someone
to answer
he questions I had in my heart. This was in my
barracks, all alone, by myself when I asked.
About a week later, I was getting gas at midnight
right near the barracks, a your Mexican man pulled
up to
the other side of the pump and started talking
to me.
I
thought, “Who
is this guy?” I
got in my car and was about to close the door when
I realized the man was standing right by my door and
asking me
if I am a Christian. A Christian? I said, I
guess so, I think so!!! He told me that was not the
right answer
and could he talk to me for a little while.
I figured that if I did not say yes, he would not
leave me alone.
We pulled over by the side of the gas station.
Carlos
pulled out his Bible, put it on top of his car and
started flying
through it.
He
told
me about
Jesus,
who He was and why He came and what I needed
to do. All the things I had learned from
reading tracts
and the New Testament. I had never met anyone
who had told
me, with the power of the Holy Ghost, speaking
words
so convincing and convicting. At one point
he looked at me and said, “The Lord
has sent me to you to answer the questions
you
have in your heart!”
I
thought to myself, “This guy
does not know me, he was not in my room when I told
God this!” And
now, after midnight, at a gas station, God
was answering my request.
He
had heard me, would I hear Him?"
